The Albatross

Today we headed down to Cartagena, we thought we should do something on the sea side in the Mediterranean, and this had some old roman stuff and didn’t look too Ibizaish. Tuna got us into town without an explosions or carnage and we went in search of lunch. We thought down by the harbour water front would be good, but there were three sad restaurants full of sadder looking poms poking grey food around a plate so we thought otherwise.
Instead we went inland and ended up climbing a hill which looked over quite a few lovely roman ruins. Unfortunately once you’d seen them from above you had pretty much seen them.
I must mention it really was quite pretty, but I’d had a coffee for breaky (last night was a large meal) and I was feeling peckish. From the top of the hill, we had spied the local plaza so thought that would be a sure bet. We did find a café with a pretty good meal, but our main thought was, where are all the locals? Even for Spain at 2:00 in the arvo it was dead. In fact the entire town felt like that. So having climbed another hill to look at some old stuff (well they did have an escalator which does motivate the half arsed tourist), and spying no one about we headed back to our hotel to rinse some knickers and plot future adventures.
After a few dodgy back streets, we eventually wandered into a little square and found humans, this lead onto a street with people and restaurants. It was good to know we weren’t in the midst of a zombie apocalypse; we just walked the wrong way out of our hotel which was 50 metres away.
Dinner was much more fun, with a couple of stops for Tapas and a couple of glasses of wine. Cartagena’s quite nice; just avoid anywhere where you would normally expect to have fun or food (although the harbour is very pretty).
